Alpagartas or Espadrille Sandals were first worn some 4000 years ago in Egypt. Once considered peasant footwear, alpagartas or espadrilles have grown in popularity especially along the French Atlantic coast and throughout the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Below are just a small selection of our sandals as we have over 100 designs.
We are excited to introduce them in our showroom in New Mexico and nationwide via our on-line store. Hand-crafted the soles of espadrilles may be flat, platform, or wedge shaped made of natural fiber. What makes each shoe especially unique is the artwork made by indigenous women from the region of Chiapas, Mexico. The artisans in this region embody their Mayan soul in the looms created and embroidered in each shoe. With some 10 hours of craft, each pair of shoes has a distinct colorful design depicting their Mayan roots. The alpagartas are later manufactured in Leon, Guanajuato.
